Confused about your personal brand?

So was Mackenzie!

Watch this short 1-minute video to see how Mackenzie used my self-guided branding exercise to get unstuck.

Mackenzie Collier runs a highly successful interior design firm with over 10 employees across 2 cities. She’s working on scaling her business and offering an online course teaching business skills to interior designers.

However, she (and her marketing team) were stuck on how to define her new brand as she steps into this new iteration of her career.

Want to see what Mackenzie is talking about?

Let’s take a look at her mood board below. What do YOU see there?

Here’s how Mackenzie described her board…

Q: What do I feel when I look at these?
I feel inspired and understood. I know my vibe isn’t for everyone, but it suits me perfectly.

Q: What do I love?
I love the juxtaposition of nature with edgy urban landscapes. I love bold, unapologetic women who are comfortable in their skin and living in their truth. I love unconventional color palettes & patterns. You shouldn’t have to fit into a box as either pretty OR adventurous, ambitious OR wild & fun…etc. You can be all of those at the same time.

Q: What does the photo tell you about the person?
The people are comfortable in their skin, living for their passions, and disrupting the status quo.

Mackenzie finished her board and shared it with me.

Here’s my email to her with my suggestions for her photos…

Hi Mackenzie,

The first words that came to my mind when I saw your boards were: Feminist, Irreverent, Subversive and (cares about) Environment.

My impression of you from your board

  1. Your core values are not about material wealth or showing it off.

  2. You don't subscribe to the typical #girlboss culture of performative hustling.

  3. You have a keen and very unique sense of style.

My recommendations for your photos

  1. Show the things and people you value through your clothes, background and props

  2. Consider creating some irreverent photos mocking the hustle culture you don’t care for!

  3. Include a range of outfits in your shoot: from a suit (like the British Vogue photo) to a dress (the Tina Fey photo), but make sure every outfit subverts convention in some visible way.

How does that sound? Excited to see how you bring your new brand to life!

Cheers,
Raj
